The O Antiphons are seven ancient prayers traditionally sung or recited from 17 to 23 December, in the days leading up to Christmas.

Each begins with the word “O” and addresses Jesus by a different title drawn from Scripture, revealing something about who He is and how He comes to save us.

Together, these prayers express the longing of God's people for the coming of Christ.

What are the O Antiphons?

The seven O Antiphons contain a beautiful hidden message known as an acrostic.

When the first letters of the seven Latin titles of Christ are read in reverse order, they spell ERO CRAS, which means “Tomorrow, I will come” in Latin.

As we call upon Christ through His seven names, the acrostic reveals a beautiful response to our prayers: Christ Himself promises to come to us. It is a fitting reminder of the hope and anticipation at the heart of Advent. We await His coming, knowing that He is already drawing near.

Why are we journeying with the O Antiphons?

Creating Christ Encounters: Many Parts, One Body

Our parish theme invites us not only to learn about Christ, but to encounter Him personally and allow that encounter to shape how we live.

The O Antiphons offer us a beautiful way to do this. Through seven different names, we discover the richness of who Jesus is: our Wisdom, our Light, our King, our Emmanuel.

Yet this journey is not simply about knowing more names of Christ. It also invites us to ask:

Who is Christ to me?

Where is He present in my life?

Who is He calling me to be?

As one parish family, each of us encounters Christ in different ways. With our different gifts, experiences and callings, we are invited to respond to Him as Many Parts of one Body.
