Catechetical Ministry
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
Matthew 19:14
About Our Ministry
At the Church of St Bernadette, our Catechetical Ministry journeys with children and youth (ages 7–16) in their Catholic faith formation. We collaborate closely with the archdiocesan Office for Catechesis (OFC) and our parish’s Faith Formation Pillar.
Our Catechists
Our catechists are members of the community who impart the Catholic faith, complementing the primary role of parents and godparents. Centered on our Saviour and one Teacher, Jesus Christ, they transmit the key pillars of the Catholic faith: Scripture and Tradition, Sacraments, Life in Christ, and Prayer. They accompany children through sacramental preparation, engaging classroom sessions, encouragement in participation in Catholic devotions, and involvement in parish community activities. From early on, classrooms are designed as sacred spaces where children can meaningfully encounter Jesus.

Faith Formation Journey

Our catechism journey begins at Level 1 (Primary 1 equivalent, age 7) and continues through to Level 10 (age 16). Ideally, children commence their faith formation from the age of seven, embarking on a structured path that deepens their understanding and experience of the Catholic faith.
Throughout this journey, children are prepared for significant sacramental milestones:
-
Reconciliation (Level 2, around age 8) Children are prepared to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) for the first time in Level 2. This sacrament helps them experience God’s mercy and forgiveness in a personal way, building the foundation for lifelong conversion.
-
Holy Communion (Level 3, around age 9) In Level 3, children are prepared to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. They learn the meaning of the Mass, the Real Presence of Christ, and how to live a Eucharistic life united to Christ and the Church.
-
Confirmation (Level 10, around age 16) Youths are prepared in a 4-year program begins from Level 7 to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Level 10. Through this sacrament, youths are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthened to live as committed witnesses of Christ in the world.
Upon their Confirmation, many of our youth are encouraged to become youth facilitators within Catechetical Ministry or to serve in other parish ministries, continuing their faith journey through active service and joyful witnessing.
Catechism Classes
Sessions are held on Sunday mornings from January to December, aligning with the local school calendar. We have two timings to accommodate different levels:

We warmly welcome previously commissioned catechists from other parishes to join our community.
