Sunday School

Why must we attend Sunday Classes?

To the Parents who so kindly and effortlessly send your children to these classes, allow me the Sunday School Co-ordinator, Patricia Tham, to introduce the Sunday School.

We have 10 Classes from Pre-primary to Confirmation Class, i.e. Secondary 3. Currently we have 22 teachers and 3 parent help for these 10 classes. In addition, we have a post confirmation class this year who are under the guidance of Adrian & Anne from the Family Life Group. We have 360 children in total i.e. average per class 33.

Aims

The Sunday school aims to communicate the Good News of God to the children through Catechism Classes each Sunday from 9.00 am to 10.30 am. Children walk through faith formation with their respective Catechist using the “Walking by Faith” series and for Confirmation Class, we are using the series by Thomas Zanzig – “Confirmed in a Faithful Community”. Children are encouraged to share and participate in classes. In addition, teachers continually use appropriate and creative activities such as songs, story-telling, arts & craft to illustrate and communicate with the children and youth.

Each year, the Sunday School Teachers will prepare children and youths for:

Reconciliation & First Holy Communion – preparation commence from Pr 2 and would include ensuring children understand what is evil/sin, know how to repent, reconcile and receive forgiveness from the loving God.

Confirmation – the youth know their responsibilities as young adult receiving the Holy Spirit and confirming their Catholic Faith.

Baptism preparation for those children who have not received this sacrament yet.

In addition, Teachers will organize an annual event involving parents. Such event varies from visit to places of interest, camping, games day, etc…etc… dependence on resources availability.

Parents are encouraged to join force with the Teachers to make these events meaningful and enjoyable for the children and youth.

Of course, we have the Children Mass organized specially for the children and youth on the 1st Sundays of each month throughout the entire year. Parents are strongly encouraged to join these masses held at the Parish Hall from 10.30 a.m. each month.

Challenges that the teachers face with include:

  • encouraging children to attend mass;
  • sustaining and retaining children’s attention (as today’s children tends to be hyper-active, especially the boys);
  • parent’s assistance and participation in this faith formation journey of their children; and
  • more volunteers to be Catechist.

Teachers also have our own retreat and attend courses organized by Singapore Pastoral Institute each year. These programmes are very enriching, strong faith formation and enhance catechism teaching skills.

We welcome new members to join our Catechist Team and/or Parent Help Team.

You can contact me, Patricia Tham at 9592-1354, or leave your contact with Joseph, the Church Secretary.

Words cannot express them all, come forth - experience and journey with us. Come and join us.
